Imaging is the accepted industry standard for the preservation of digital evidence for use in a litigated matter or investigation. The image file contains forensic markers known as ‘hash codes’ (also called hash sums or hash values) that are used to prove that the original and the copy are a perfect match.

When performed correctly, forensic analysis can uncover data that may appear to be badly damaged, destroyed, deleted, encrypted or password protected. This can include audio and video files, e-mail, various documents and their ‘hidden’ background data, web browsing history, instant messaging chat logs, images, message board and social network interaction, and more. In addition to saved and deleted files (which may simply reside in the ‘recycling bin’ or can be captured and restored using specialized forensic software), on a properly secured computer hard drive, temporary files and meta data can be analyzed, as well. Temporary files are often created without a user’s knowledge while web browsing or editing a document, as well as through certain types of back-up software and software installations. Meta data generally includes the dates in which a file or document was created, modified and last accessed. Depending upon the initial installation of the application being analyzed, it may also be possible to identify both the original creator of the file and anyone who has ever accessed the file at any time since its creation.
